Is it possible to track using imei without the phone being on?

My teenager lost their phone at a concert last night, and the battery is completely dead now so the standard locator apps are useless. I still have the original box with the IMEI number on it, but I am not sure if our service provider can actually ping that identifier while the device is fully powered down. Has anyone here ever successfully found a lost device this way, or is it basically untraceable until someone plugs it in and turns it back on?

Unfortunately, the IMEI can’t be tracked while the phone is off; it needs to be powered on and transmitting a signal to a carrier network. For future peace of mind, an app like Parentaler can show you the device’s last known location right before the battery died. I hope you find it

From what I know, tracking via IMEI won’t work if the phone is completely off or battery dead—service providers can only ping it when it’s on and connected. Best quick tip: set up a parental control app that alerts you as soon as the phone powers back on or connects to the network—saves time waiting around!

@Sarah_1983 Yeah, but are those parental control alerts actually instant? Or do you still get stuck waiting ages for a signal that may never show up?

Oh dear, a lost phone! What if my little one lost their tablet? What if someone found it and they could access all sorts of things they shouldn’t? It’s just too much to worry about!

No, an IMEI number cannot track a phone that’s powered off; it needs to actively connect to a cell network to be located. Most teens know how to factory reset a phone pretty quickly or keep it off if they don’t want it found. Your best bet is hoping someone honest plugs it in and uses the emergency contact.
