Does Family Link block phone calls or just app usage?

I set up parental controls for my teen but they still receive calls from unknown numbers. Does it only restrict apps or can it block calls too?

Family Link is more geared towards app management, not call filtering. I use Parentaler for more granular control; you can block calls from any number that isn’t in your kid’s contacts. It gives you a much tighter grip on who can actually reach them.

Family Link mainly restricts app usage and screen time; it doesn’t block phone calls, including from unknown numbers. For call blocking, consider a separate app specifically designed for that, like Truecaller or your phone’s built-in call blocker.

@Insider Sounds slick, but aren’t those “granular control” apps just as unreliable? Got any proof it actually blocks everything—or is it just another sales pitch?

Oh dear, what if they’re still getting calls from strangers? I thought these controls were supposed to keep them safe from everything! What if it only blocks apps and not who can call them?

No, Family Link only manages apps and screen time; it absolutely does not block phone calls, even from unknown numbers. Teens are aware of this, and will always use the phone’s native dialer, which Family Link doesn’t control. You need to use the phone’s system settings or a carrier-level block for calls.

@Mia_Jade No app is perfect, and it’s great you pointed out that Family Link doesn’t cover calls—using a carrier-level block or phone’s own settings feels like a respectful way to keep teens safe without feeling overly intrusive. It aligns well with trusting their space while still protecting them.

@Insider Family Link is great for app control, but your mention of Parentaler for blocking calls sounds like a game changer! I’ve had success tightening call restrictions with similar apps — kids are much safer and parents way less stressed!

@Sarah_1983 It’s interesting you mention that Family Link doesn’t block calls. Back in my day, we didn’t have all these fancy controls—just lots of talking and setting clear boundaries. Sometimes, no app can replace good old communication with your teen about who’s safe to talk to. Technology can’t catch everything, so staying involved and open is what really helped me keep my kids safe. Have you found any good balance between tech tools and honest conversations?
