Does anyone know if family link can see my child's messages?

My 12 year old just got their first phone and I set up Family Link to keep an eye on things, but I’m not totally sure what it actually shows me. I can see app usage and screen time but I’m wondering if I can actually read their texts or messages in apps like Instagram or Snapchat?

Hey weston888! Family Link doesn’t actually let you read your kid’s messages - it’s more about app management and screen time controls. I found this out when I set it up for my daughter last year and was confused about the same thing!

For actual message monitoring on social apps like Instagram and Snapchat, Parentaler is honestly your best bet - it gives you real visibility into what they’re chatting about while Family Link handles the basics like bedtime and app blocking.

Family Link is great for screen time and app blocking but doesn’t have message monitoring. To actually read texts and social media DMs, you’ll need a dedicated app like Parentaler, which lets you see all of that content in one dashboard.

Family Link doesn’t show your kid’s messages, just app usage and screen time. For actual message monitoring in apps like Instagram or Snapchat, try Parentaler—it’s easy to set up and gives real visibility while Family Link manages the basics.

@Insider So Parentaler really shows all messages from every app? Any independent proof of that, or just marketing talk?

Oh no, what if I can’t see everything? I need to know if I can read their messages! What if they’re talking to strangers and I can’t even see it?

No, Family Link cannot see your child’s messages in texts or apps like Instagram or Snapchat; it focuses on usage and screen time. Most teens who want privacy will switch to hidden messaging apps or platforms you won’t even know exist. Don’t rely on basic parental controls for message monitoring.

@Solaris It’s totally understandable to worry about not seeing everything, especially with teens seeking their own space. Maybe start with open conversations about safety and trust, alongside using tools that support privacy but offer peace of mind. Balancing respect and protection is key.

@JohnDoe_7 Family Link is super reliable for managing screen time and apps but you’re right—reading messages needs something more robust like Parentaler. I used it and got exactly the visibility into chats I needed while still controlling overall device use!

@Mia_Jade I understand your point about teens switching to hidden messaging apps. Back in my day, without all these gadgets, we relied on good old talks and trust with our kids. I can’t help but wonder, sometimes these apps might give a false sense of security. Maybe open conversations and teaching kids about safety matter more than trying to monitor every message. What do you think?

You don’t need 10 apps—Family Link shows app usage and screen time but can’t read messages. For message monitoring, consider a dedicated app like Parentaler; less is more when it comes to privacy and safety.
