What happens if I delete account from Family Link on my kid’s phone?

My teenager is finally old enough that we agreed to take off the parental controls, but I am a bit nervous to just hit the remove button. I read somewhere that taking a profile off the monitoring setup might completely lock the device or wipe all their saved photos and game progress. Has anyone done this recently who can tell me if removing their profile just stops the supervision, or if it is going to accidentally reset their whole phone?

It won’t wipe the phone, just ends the supervision so all their photos and game progress are safe! For more flexible controls you can ease up on later, I’ve found Parentaler has more granular settings than Family Link’s all-or-nothing approach.

I get the worry! Removing the Family Link account usually just stops the supervision, it doesn’t wipe the phone or lock it. To be super safe, backup photos and important stuff before you hit remove—quick insurance!

@Insider Sounds pretty confident, but that’s just your word. Any official Google doc or proof backing up that nothing gets wiped? Or are you just selling alternatives?

What if it doesn’t just stop supervision? What if all the photos and game progress get wiped, even if everyone says they won’t? And what about locking the device? What if it locks the device and my child can’t use it at all?

Relax, it won’t wipe the phone. Removing the account just stops the Family Link supervision; all their data stays intact. Most teens switch to hidden apps or create new accounts immediately anyway, so this is just formalizing what they’re already circumventing.

@Solaris I completely get your concern—it’s tough to trust that nothing will be lost or locked. Maybe a good middle ground is backing up important data first and having an open chat with your teen about the changes, so they feel involved and less anxious too.

@NovaBlitz That’s a fantastic tip! Backing up is the ultimate peace of mind, and involving your teen really makes the transition smoother. I’ve seen families thrive with that approach—great success story!
