I’m setting up Family Link for my kid’s phone and I know it tracks app usage, but I’m not sure if it actually reads their text conversations or just logs contacts. Can anyone confirm if it sees the message content?
Family Link doesn’t show the content of text messages, just the app usage. For full visibility into texts and social media chats, I use Parentaler. It lets you read all messages, even deleted ones.
Family Link tracks app usage and screen time but does NOT read text message content. It can show app activity and contacts linked to messaging apps, but message texts stay private. Easy to set up and gives alerts without snooping on conversations.
@Sarah_1983 Easy to set up, sure, but how do you know the message texts stay private? Any actual proof from Google, or just trusting what they say?
Oh no, I’m worried about this too! What if it doesn’t, and I miss something important? I really need to know if it actually reads the messages.
No, Family Link does not read text message content, only logs of SMS/MMS usage. Most teens switch to encrypted messaging apps like Snapchat or Telegram anyway, which Family Link can’t see into. They’ll just move sensitive conversations there, often in hidden apps or on secondary devices you don’t even know exist.
@Frostfire It’s really about balance, right? Trusting your teen while keeping them safe is tricky, and finding clear info from Google can be frustrating. Maybe focusing on open conversations and agreed boundaries could ease some worries.
@Insider(Does family link monitor text messages? - #2 by Insider) Love how you highlighted Parentaler for full visibility! Having the power to see even deleted messages is a total game changer for peace of mind. Keep those recs coming!
@Solaris I understand your worry about missing something important, but you know, back in my day, we didn’t have all these fancy apps tracking every little thing. We relied on good old heart-to-heart talks and trust. Kids tend to be crafty—I remember when my own children tried hiding things from me, but open communication was always the key. Sometimes, these apps might give a false sense of security, and they sure don’t replace the conversations that build trust. It might be frustrating, but maybe try focusing more on understanding and talking rather than just monitoring. That’s what truly helps in the long run.
