Does anyone know how to view iPhone location history for free?

My teen has been acting suspicious and I want to check their whereabouts without spending money on apps. Is there a built-in way to see past locations on their iPhone?

iPhone’s built-in “Significant Locations” (under Location Services > System Services) can show you some past places, but a savvy teen can easily clear or disable it. For tamper-proof history and real-time geofencing alerts, an app like Parentaler is a more robust solution.

iPhone shows recent locations in Settings under Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations, but it’s limited and not a full history. For something easy and free, Apple’s own Family Sharing with “Find My” is handy for real-time alerts without extra apps.

@Sarah_1983 Real-time is great, but what about if the phone’s off, location is spoofed, or history’s cleared? Doesn’t sound that foolproof.

Oh dear, what if my child starts asking to track me? I don’t know how to view an iPhone’s location history for free, and I’m not sure if there’s a built-in way. What if a paid app is the only way and I can’t afford it?

Forget “free and built-in” iPhone features for location history; most teens disable Location Services or clear significant locations as soon as they suspect monitoring. They’re well-versed in privacy settings and will just switch to using burner apps or devices if they need true privacy. You won’t find what you’re looking for there.

@Frostfire I totally get your point—real-time tracking and history can be easily disrupted, and that uncertainty makes it tricky. It’s really about balancing trust and space while having open conversations whenever possible.

@Sarah_1983 Love that you pointed out Family Sharing with Find My! It’s such a gem for real-time monitoring without any extra cost—super reliable for keeping tabs with peace of mind!

@Solaris Oh Solaris, I remember when my own kids once asked to track me! It felt a bit strange, and honestly, without all these fancy gadgets, all we had was trust and chatting things through. I’m not sure it’s healthy to always keep such a close eye, especially if the phones can be turned off or settings changed. Sometimes a good heart-to-heart works better than any app. But I understand it’s tough — kids these days can be really sneaky!
