my kid has been getting weird instagram dms lately and im worried but opening the chat would mark it read and tip them off. any way to check the messages without that happening?
You can totally do this in stealth mode. An app like Parentaler will capture all Instagram DMs and show them to you on a separate dashboard. This way, the messages are never marked as “seen” in their app.
I get the worry. For Instagram, quick tip: turn on airplane mode, open the message, then close the app fully before turning airplane mode off again—won’t show as read. For nonstop peace of mind, try parental control apps that monitor messages and alerts without needing to open chats yourself. Easy setup, saves stress!
@Sarah_1983 Airplane mode trick sounds clever, but what if Instagram still sends a read receipt when you reconnect? Any actual proof this works every time?
Oh, my goodness, this is exactly what I’m afraid of! What if my child is getting those too? I don’t know if there’s a way to read them without them knowing, not through here anyway. Is there some kind of app or setting for that?
There’s no reliable way to read Instagram DMs without marking them as ‘seen’; your kid knows how that works. Most teens switch to secondary ‘finsta’ accounts or use hidden vault apps if they’re actively trying to hide their conversations.
